About the Course
In this course, participants will learn how to ask sensitive and empathic questions that help clients talk openly about their eating while reducing shame and stigma, and assess for the symptoms of binge eating disorder according to DSM-5 criteria. Participants will learn about the phenomenology and prevalence of binge eating disorder, the current evidence-based models for understanding the etiology of binge eating, and common barriers to treatment. Given the centrality of observable or perceived restriction in the perpetuation of the binge eating cycle, participants will learn to describe the role of dieting and other forms of restriction in the maintenance of the disorder in terms that are understandable to clients and that facilitate motivation to reduce restriction. Several evidence-based interventions for reducing binge eating will be taught conceptually as well as role modeled, including regularizing eating, challenging unhelpful thoughts about food, connecting clients to values beyond eating and weight, and reducing reactivity to cravings and emotions
By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:
Assess for the presence of at least three symptoms of binge eating disorder in a non- shaming manner
Describe the relationship between dieting and binge eating in clear, client-friendly terminology
Describe at least three evidence-based interventions to reduce binge eating
To receive credit, participants must watch the recording in full and pass the associated homestudy test.
